METANOEITE26
Annual Spring Colloquium
April 24—25, 2026
Odyssey Coffee, Ocean Grove, NJ
Metanoeite26
Metanoeite is a transliteration of the ancient Greek word μετανοεῖτε: “change the way you think.” It’s Jesus’ first word as a teacher in Matthew 4:17 — “Change the way you think (metanoeite) because the kingdom of heaven is near.”
Typically translated repent, the word actually entails a radical and comprehensive reassessment in how we think and act in light of Jesus. In the context of the Gospel, metanoeite entails a hard break with the past, and a wholesale adoption of Christlike thinking and acting.
Join us for Christlike thinking on the highest things at Metanoeite26.
Core Idea for Discussion at Metanoeite26
Christlike Self-Governance. This phrase captures the essence of classical, Christian education (Christlike + self-governance), as well as the dual citizenships of the American Christian (Christian + American). It also gestures toward:
the disciple’s aim to become more like Christ
the classical philosophical notion of self-control
the idea of the church governing itself well
No, there can be no “Christian state” — ever, anywhere — because Jesus did not establish a polity. So the phrase “Christian state” is an oxymoron. At the same time it is true that America is essentially a human miracle, politically speaking: a society of freedom and prosperity of unprecedented magnitude in human history, and it’s not even close. Thus, while there can never be a “Christian state,” there can be disciples of Jesus seeking to become more Christlike while at the same time doing our part to preserve the American miracle. At Metanoeite26 let us explore how disciples of Jesus can remain true to Him as both subjects of His kingdom and citizens of the American republic.
