Odyssey U is for my sons but you can come too.

Isaac, Hayden, & Eli:

I will be your university.

Around here

we study the highest things for our daily lives. We aim to honor God, heed Christ’s call to metanoia, serve others, and do our part to build a free & virtuous society.

We begin with the confident humility that there are indeed beautiful things to know and to do, and that we, as the imago dei, have the capacity and the obligation and the joyful purpose to learn and to live those high things, once understood.

These high things exist independent of us, outside of us, irrespective of our feelings. These high things are, in a word, wisdom. We yearn to discover them, and to prosper thereby.

At one time in the past I might have sent you to an American university to learn wisdom. Yet in my 27+ years in academia, I have witnessed firsthand the sickly demise of all but a niche few American universities. Once vaunted sanctuaries of philosophical inquiry — where I personally encountered Homer and Moses, Socrates and Jesus, Locke and Jefferson — these American institutions are now sad seminaries of ideology.

They churn out citizen-slaves (a harsh oxymoron), burdened with debt, minds destroyed by semester after semester of veiled-Marxist junk, hearts limp and terrified to express, let alone feel, any personal affection for our (essentially miraculous) country.

In 2023 one private university in New Jersey told me, “You are not eligible for a full time professorship here because you are a white male. We are only hiring women and people of color.” Here’s what we do when we encounter such human foolishness. We do not slander, we do not complain. We live the highest things, and say, “Good, I’ll take my teaching elsewhere.”

Around here we will not spend a dime on these civilization-destroying pseudo-schools. Instead, I will be your university.

My duty as your father is to shepherd your hearts upwards, to protect your mind, to build you into God-fearing and human-serving men. I will teach you the sublime art of philology, thus you will gain unmediated access to humanity’s highest thoughts. You will live these thoughts in your own homes, you will build real schools and thriving businesses, you will save civilization, and you will teach others the path to freedom and virtue.

Finally as you grow wiser and wiser in learning and living the highest things, you will come back. Like a kindergartner excited to share your crayon drawing after school, you will find me, and you will show me what you’ve seen, and what you’ve made, and what you’ve learned, and you will teach me. I will rejoice in you as only a father can rejoice in you.

And you will be my university.

We will then seek God, prosper our households, build up our friends, pray for our enemies, and save our America together. Doing so we will ascend to the highest heights of fathers and of sons.

To that end we work. I love you, Dad
